    Antique Chinese Peking Carpet Fully Restored

    We restored a large antique Chinese carpet for a client in the Pimlico, London (SW1V) postcode area. A stunning example of a rare Chinese/Peking carpet, pure wool pile, cotton warp and weft foundations and natural dyes in ivory, blues, yellows and pinks rose motifs.

    A rug in need of significant restoration as it dates back well over 100 years.
    We removed all the old rug repairs.
    We then matched wools with our stock antique wools.
    Each section was re-built carefully:

    • We built hand looms around each section of the rug
    • We re-built the cotton foundations first, ensuring the tensions were maintained
    • Sections were then re-knotted by hand, using exactly the same method and knot as used originally to weave this beautiful carpet.

    The work took us approximately 4 months to complete but the result was stunning!

    Before & After Of A Pure Silk Qum Persian Rug

    The piece had become very brittle from being stored in varying humid & dry conditions that it cracked in many places, splitting the sides open.
    So it need cleaning and repairing thoroughly using the traditional methods that are best.
    We secured the splits, applying new silks to the worst areas – building small hand looms around each section, re-weaving the foundations and re-knotting the areas that needed built back up.
    The below image is what the rug looked like after our work and it is now restored back to its former glory.

    Ziegler Antique Rug

    We picked up an antique Ziegler, circa 1800, 25ft x 18ft. The rug is quite fragile as you can imagine and needs a lot of repairs to stop it falling to bits. We will also give it a professional hand clean and return it with specialist underlay, which will allow the rug/carpet to be used without it deteriorating any further.

    Our client inherited this piece from his grandmother and had no idea of its origins or value.

    A similar, but smaller rug sold 2 years ago at auction in New York for $220,000.

    Our client had intended selling the rug for about the cost of the repair, before we informed him of its possible value

    Earls Court, London Oriental Rug Cleaned and Restored

    As you can see from the image, this is a particularly fine piece with very soft wools. The piece has natural dyes, is handmade and has a cotton foundation.

    The client had owned it for many years and was in fact an heirloom from her father – purchased somewhere between 1930 and 1940 in the Middle East.

    Once the rug was hand cleaned it looked incredible and revealed the true golden colours of the wools and striking designs in the centre of the field.

    After the rug had been cleaned and some small repairs to the fringes were conducted – we called the client to arrange delivery.

    1. Analysis & Inspection

    Every hand made rug is different so analysis is key. We provide no obligation estimates & our advice is always free of charge. We can inspect the rug in situ or you can bring them to our workshops

    2. Pick Up - Free Of Charge

    Once the carpets or rugs have been inspected, we will uplift them free of charge

    3. Hand Wash in Our London Workshop

    The repair team will conduct further analysis before hand washing the piece and allowing it to dry naturally to avoid shrinking

    4. Match Wools & Conduct Repairs

    Once we have matched wools, we conduct our repairs by hand using only traditional methods. A final hand wash takes place here before the piece is ready for delivery

    5. Deliver Back To Your Home

    Once the rugs or carpets are ready, we will contact you to arrange a suitable time for delivery – evening and weekend appointments are readily available
